Serve the people of New Jersey by becoming a doctor through the CityDoctors Scholarship Program.

CityDoctors St. Joseph University Medical Center is the visionary cooperative effort between St. Joseph University Medical Center and St. George’s University, Grenada, an international leader in medical education. The program is designed to attract and educate New Jersey’s best and brightest to become doctors committed to serving the city’s residents.

Each year, St. Joseph’s University Medical Center will provide full and partial tuition scholarships to attend St. George’s University School of Medicine.

As part of their scholarship and continued education, each student commits to completing all third-year clinical rotations at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, and maintain the regular academic standards set forth by St. George’s University School of Medicine.

Each year, St. Joseph’s University Medical Center will provide full and partial tuition scholarships to attend St. George’s University School of Medicine.

Eligibility for the CityDoctors Scholarship Program

Full and partial scholarship recipients will be selected by St. Joseph’s University Medical Center and awarded to eligible* incoming students accepted to St. George’s University School of Medicine Doctor of Medicine program in January or April.

In order to qualify for the scholarship, applicant must be a first-time incoming SGU student, a US citizen or US Permanent Resident, and meet one or more of the following criteria:

The deadline to submit an application for this scholarship application is November 20th.

Eligible students can apply for this scholarship once they have been accepted into the St. George’s University School of Medicine MD program.

The application will include:

  • An essay explaining why you are a good candidate for the of St. Joseph’s University Medical Center Scholarship program based on one or more of the following topics: (A) outstanding academic achievement, (B) community work, (C) leadership roles, (D) financial hardship. Please use the space provided on the application or submit the essay on a separate sheet of paper. Essays should be approximately 500 words, typed, and enclosed with this application.
  • Completion of all questions/fields listed on page 1–4.
  • Include the following items with this application: (a.) Documentation which supports that you meet either the Bergen, Passaic or Essex County, NJ residency or St. Joseph’s University Medical Center employment criteria (i.e. pay stub, residency affidavit, copy of lease, etc.). Please feel free to include copies of awards, abstracts etc. 4.

Print this application and sign the agreement on page 2 and the FERPA release on page 3, and email all documents in a single attachment to citydoctors@sgu.edu.

We will be awarding one full, two halves or multiple partial tuition scholarships for January start terms (April applicants admitted who apply prior to the November 20th deadline are eligible). Award determinations are based on:

  • Demonstrated academic excellence
  • The applicant’s commitment to the special qualities associated with this program
  • The degree of financial need and the availability of funds from the school and other sources.

In return for accepting the scholarship:

  • Student must complete all required third year core rotations at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center
  • Student must maintain the regular academic standards set forth by St. George’s University School of Medicine
